AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM |
|||||||||||||||||||
Generally, the Bayview After School Program seeks to promote positive youth development through enabling youth to make positive choices by confidently rejecting and withstanding the lure of negative choices in order to become valuable, contributing members of society. More specifically, the program's primary goals include the following: a) provide professional, safe and free childcare for youth from disadvantaged families largely residing on the Triangle; b) use cultural, artistic and educational programming to promote character development and positive values; c) provide youth with a sense of safety and security that extends from within the program to the surrounding neighborhood; and d) offer concerned, dedicated and qualified staff to youth so that they may form a supportive adult relationship with at least two staff or volunteers. Bayview's strategy in accomplishing these goals is to encourage children's natural curiosity to develop lifelong learning patterns by engaging them in creative, positive experiences. The Bayview After School Program serves youth primarily ages 7 to 12 from low to middle-income families residing on the Triangle and in neighboring communities. The population is racially diverse, including individuals of Hispanic, Black, Asian, Native American and White backgrounds. The Bayview Townhouses (source of program's principal population) serve 102 families with 87% of the heads of households born outside the United States. The After School Program is offered within the Bayview International Center for Education and the Arts, as well as on Bayview's grounds and throughout the greater Madison community.
The Bayview After School Program consists of education, recreation, art and culture programming (part of Artsbridge), as well as a necessary outreach component. The academic portion of the program will involve homework help (held jointly with Teen Nite), one-on-one reading tutoring (and D.E.A.R.), cooking, Science Alliance, service learning, library and computer classes, and more. The recreational portion of the program consists of fieldtrips, indoor games, partnerships with local open gyms and athletic leagues such as volleyball, soccer, touch football and tennis. In addition, youth have an opportunity to participate in high-energy team games that promote team building and physical exercise such as tag games, relay races, dodgeball and more. Both the education and recreation components are coordinated and developed by Teri LeSage, an experienced program director with over six years experience working with typically underserved youth populations. Art and culture programming will include music, visual arts, communication skills, crafts, creative writing, dance and art history. The art and culture portions of the program will be coordinated and developed by Nancy Giffey who is a certified K-12 teacher and has a Masters in Art and Teaching from the University of Wisconsin, Madison (MAT, 1977).
Complementing these direct service aspects of the Bayview After School Program is an outreach program, jointly coordinated and developed by Paul Ly and Nancy Giffey. Paul, a multilingual and experienced Hmong heritage director, is responsible primarily for addressing parental concerns of local Asian immigrants regarding youth participation, coordinating weekend activities, as well as collaborating with other agencies to provide unduplicated services. Nancy continues to brige the gap between all residents on the Triangle through art and creative writing, working closely with the UW-Madison Theatre and Drama Department and Art Therapy interns from Edgewood College. By actively and creatively addressing the need for quality, consistent and structured programming in education, recreation, art and culture in the Bayview After School Program, youth will be more apt to be constructive in their use of time and, consequently, gain knowledge, understanding and appreciation of related activities.
